Well, well, well, where do we begin? Damon's father has been teaching Ballroom dancing in New Orleans since 1948 and, at that time, had the largest studio in the city on Canal St. Although Damon knew his father was a dance instructor he did not get his start through him. As for Lisa, her Dad was not a teacher , but a dancer nonetheless. He grew up dancing jitterbug and his sister was an established Ballet dancer her whole life. With her talent and his strength, they decided to begin competing in Theater Arts. Although Lisa's dad used to toss her around a bit to the “I drink Dr. Pepper don’t cha know” song it was her big brother who taught her how to Two Step when she was 10.
Although Damon and Lisa grew up in different States, they had quite a few things in common. Between the ages of 6 and 15, Lisa had already had 7 years of competitive Dance, Figure, and Speed Skating and 6 years of Tap, Jazz, and Ballet. Damon had 7 years of competitive Roller Skating, mostly Speed. In the summer between 9th and 10th grade Damon answered an ad in the paper and started teaching Ballroom at age 15 in Little Rock at a studio by the name of "Steppen' Out" winning his first competition shortly thereafter. By the age of 16 Damon had obviously had his fill of football, track, baseball and skating and realized where the money and cute girls were. A year later he moved to New Orleans with his Dad and taught dance lessons at The University of New Orleans. Lisa on the other hand, was busy being a cheerleader and choreographing numbers for her school's dance team, playing basketball and softball and her passion, horses: from rodeo to trail riding to showing her horse. Who’d a thunk – Lisa – a cowgirl – YEEHAAWW!!
As soon as he was old enough to get into a bar, Damon started teaching group lessons at a Country and Western Club called Denim and Diamonds. He worked there until a big club called Mud Bugs opened. It was the biggest club you’ve ever seen! Just picture a Walmart completely empty with a horseshoe - shaped dance floor that could hold 200 people. That’s just how many people were on the dance floor taking lessons with Damon teaching them how to dance all the country dances as well as line dancing which was HUGE at the time . Country was cool, and hip, what you needed to be doing at the time. Not only was Damon teaching the dance lessons, but he was also hired as the Entertainment Director for the Club which booked some of the top Country Artists. He put on one of the largest Country and Western Contests in a bar, giving away $2000 weekly for 6 weeks and giving away $ 10,000 as the grand prize. Damon didn’t just organize these contests , he was the MC to boot!! So if you’re wondering how he got to be so good on the mike, he’s been behind it for a long time.
Meanwhile, Lisa was also in New Orleans modeling, working at Tulane University School of Medicine in the Toxicology Lab and dating a guy who danced competitively on the Country and Western Circuit. He did a little teaching on the side and Lisa assisted him for about 8 months. A few weeks later, Lisa and her boyfriend were invited to dance on a TV show and he couldn’t go. She called 2 of my dancer friends and asked if they wanted to go with me. Neither worked out. That evening she went out, saw Damon, asked him if he wanted to go, he said yes and that folks... was all she wrote!!! They've pretty much been together ever since.
In 1994 Damon assisted in opening a club called Mustangs in New Orleans and from the great dance community Damon began to build in 1991, together, they were its main source of growth for the next six years. In April of 1998 we moved to Houston and won the title of State Swing Dance Champions as well as being chosen as the National Spokespeople for The Marlboro Country Nights Dance Showdown , one of the largest nationwide dance contest s giving away $10,000 to the winner. Damon and Lisa are coming up on their 11 year wedding anniversary.
Damon and Lisa have three absolutely amazing children who are their lives. They fill them with more joy and pure, unconditional love daily than the law should allow.
Damon and Lisa have accomplished a lot in the thirteen years we’ve been together. We’ve traveled the U.S. competing on the Country and Western circuit, the Swing circuit and hold national titles in both. Damon and Lisa traveled the U.S. dancing on nine different Morning Shows in 8 different states. They judge, do exhibitions, teach group and private classes and hold workshops. They’ve both had years of ballroom and Latin training from some of the top competitive dancers in the country. With their work and perserverence , they now have some of the largest group classes in the city of Houston and continue to grow. They now offer classes in Deer Park and in Katy. Together they have received more Top Teacher awards than any other instructors in the city. Damon and Lisa have a passion for what they do. They are currently traveling the U.S. teaching dance lessons, competing in Country and in Swing, dancing with each other , as well as other partners and their students. Damon and Lisa have worked very hard to promote dancing in Houston for the past 7 years and have built a business to prove it. They LOVE what they do and all the wonderful people it brings into their lives.
